What Are Blackheads?

What are blackheads? You might have looked at your face (especially your nose) and noticed some imperfections. You see tiny little dark dots or dark/yellow dots on your face. For many, these can be especially prominent around the nose area. If you were like me when I began noticing mine, you were simply a little grossed out. Well, you just discovered some blackheads on nose or blackheads on your face.

So, what are blackheads?

Blackheads are open comedones, where sebum (skin oil) and dead skin cells that have accumulated in the pore and have oxidized. The oxidization gives blackheads the dark yellow/black color. This build up often protrudes out of the pore. These are not harmful, but are not the most aesthetically pleasing thing to have.

Blackheads are the initial stages of full blown acne. These blackheads form just before bacteria develops, inflames, and infects the skin area (also known as pimples).

How do blackheads form and what causes blackheads?

The cause of blackheads stems from many factors. Fundamentally it’s the skin oil buildup in the pores. This means the skin produces too much  oil. Also, combined this with environmental irritants like dirt or makeup, these factors help cause blackheads to form.

Excess oil

One of the major factors that cause overproduction in the oil glands  are hormones, typically around puberty. However, adults can have overactive oil glands as well. For instance, I have very oily skin and get blackhead breakouts around my nose area.

Dirt or makeup

For many people, the build up of dirt or wearing makeup are the primary causes. Without a constistance and thorough facial wash routine, dirt and pollution from the environment will build up on your face and clog your pores. Without a good facial wash routine,  dead skin cells also buildup in the pores, clogging the pore openings.

Excessive use of makeup, lotions, foundations, and other related products can also help clog pores, keep the oil in the pores trapped, forming a blackhead over time.

Preventing and getting rid of blackheads

So, after understanding what are blackheads and what causes blackheads, you will want to know how to get rid of them and prevent their future growth. How to get rid of black heads on nose involves many steps and some of these methods do not work for everyone. But my favorite is the Oil Cleansing Method which you can check out in  the link just mentioned.
